About the shows

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella

June 16-21, 2014

The world’s favorite fairy tale is now a Broadway smash hit, with all the classic moments kids remember – Cinderella’s transformation, the royal ball, and the search for the foot that fits the glass slipper.

Oklahoma!

June 23-28, 2014

The classic musical of America’s heartland showcases dramatic scenes, comedic songs and lots of great dances. Cowboy Curly, farm girl Laurey, steadfast Aunt Eller, jealous Jud and flighty Ado Annie are among the colorful characters.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

July 7-12, 2014

A kaleidoscope of musical styles fills this journey through ancient Egypt…with big dance numbers ranging from western and French to Elvis and calypso!

The Pirates of Penzance

July 14-19, 2014

This swashbuckling musical voyage is a light comic introduction to operatic themes, perfect for musically oriented kids. Sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters and an eccentric Major-General populate the stage.

Once Upon a Mattress

July 21-26, 2014

The Princess is a tomboy named Fred (short for Winifred). Even after the most exhausting musical number in the world, the “Spanish Panic,” can our heroic princess feel one tiny pea under 20 fluffy mattresses?

Fiddler on the Roof

Youth production for teens 13-18

July 30-August 16, 2014

On a professional set at Cahn Auditorium, with costumes and professional sound and lighting!

$1200 per student

$50 audition fee due with registration;
$1150 balance due upon acceptance after audition.
Audition fee will be refunded if student is not cast.

If student is cast and does not accept the role,
the audition fee will not be refunded.

In this audition-only Workshop, teens age 13 to 18 rehearse a special shortened adaptation of the Broadway classic, Fiddler on the Roof, and present a final performance with costumes, sound and lights at Cahn Auditorium, on the same professional set as the Light Opera Works adult production of Fiddler in August.

Unlike our one-week Workshops, this program is two and a half weeks and requires an audition, which will be scheduled after you register. Each role is individually cast based on auditions (not in the "tag-team" style).

Students learn with Workshop director/choreographer Caryn Ott Hillman, music director Christopher Richard and program manager Anya Plotkin...plus special guest directors, musicians and actors...to gain insight into the theatrical process. This is an opportunity to work like the professionals!

An audition is required for acceptance. We will contact you to schedule an audition after you register.

Schedule

Rehearsals are Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm, and Saturdays from noon to 3 pm at the Light Opera Works rehearsal center, 516 4th Street in Wilmette.

Technical rehearsals on August 14 and 15 are at Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson, Evanston.

The free public performance of Fiddler on the Roof youth production is on Saturday, August 16, at 2 pm at Cahn Auditorium.
